Located on the St. Joseph River, Fernwood includes 105
acres; 25-30 acres are a nature preserve that has been
relatively undisturbed for 50 years. Includes native
prairie, butterfly, and hummingbird garden, butterfly
larvae garden (host plants) and 10 acres of old pasture.
Diverse plant communities include upland forest, wetland
forest, a fern trail and woodland plants.

Landscapes
Promotes environmentally sound landscaping practices
to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration
and establishment of native plant communities. Wild
Ones is a not-for-profit environmental education and
advocacy organization. There are several chapters in
Michigan.

The arboretum's 935 acres include eight native environments
comprising maple and basswood forests, restored prairie,
oak savanna, ponds, tamarack bog, streams and fields.
Wildflowers bloom mid-April though beginning of June.
Prairie wildflowers are best mid-July to late September.
